Healthy Oil:Benefits Of Canola Oil

With health becoming the topic of all conversations and ‘fitness freak’ becoming a personality trait, it is time to focus on consuming healthy oils like canola, so that you can lead a long, healthy and active life.  Switching over to canola oil, is half the battle won, points out  Rekha Sharma, President, Indian Dietetic Association and Director, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Diabetes Foundation (India).

“There are many healthy oils available in the market and canola is one such oil. The multiple properties of this oil makes it ideal for everyday use in all culinary applications - from salad dressings, sauces and marinades to baking, sautéing .deep-frying and especially so in Indian cooking”, adds Rekha

Below is a brief on the goodness canola oil brings to one’s life and kitchen:

Blend of good fats for good health –

Canola oil is high in  omega-3 fats (11%), which help protect against heart attacks and strokes and; omega-6 fatty acids (21%) which are important for the brain.  It is also rich in healthy fatty acids like Monounsaturated fatty acids(MUFA) and very low in unhealthy fatty acids like saturated fats (that cause clogging of arteries and thus heart disease). It is rich in vitamin E that acts as an antioxidizing agent and may be a valuable tool in fighting cancer and heart disease.

Neutral taste and light colour and texture–

Canola oil is one of the most versatile cooking oils available in the market. It does not interfere with the natural colors of the other ingredients of a dish and very light in texture which makes it easy to digest

High heat tolerance –

It can be heated to a higher temperature (468°F or 242°C) than other oils before it starts to smoke which makes it ideal for high heat cooking applications from sautéing to deep-frying.
