Is Oatmeal Good for Diabetes?


Diet plays an important role in treating diabetes which will prevent the complications. Doctors are advised to take fiber rich foods such as oatmeal which will reduce the blood sugar and diabetic complications. Oatmeal helps to slow the digestion process and extend the duration of the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream.
It also helps to reduce the cholesterol level which in turn reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and heart disease by absorbing the unhealthy cholesterol from foods. A study shows that having oatmeal will result in 40% reduction of insulin dosage. Making oatmeal with water will not add any calories or carbohydrates but when it is mixed with milk it will have carbohydrate of about 6 grams for every ½ cup of milk.

So use low fat or skim milk. For diabetic person not every oatmeal products will suit so be aware of the added ingredients for sweetness and flavor. Some brands offer low sugar or sugar free version which may be a good choice.
